One of the things that families should absolutely make sure they keep up to date is Household insurance. There are two types that are essential for anyone who owns a house and if renting then just the one, contents cover, is needed as much as everyone else. Firstly the essential Contents insurance policy – this is often referrd to as comprehensive and that is exactly what it needs to be. If the insurance company or agent talks to the prospective client, they will ask how much the total furniture and effects are worth and what cover needs to be in place; contents of the garage and garden shed also need to be considered. Then there are additional items such as freeezer content cover should the main home freezer fail. There are usually covers for clothing taken on holiday, i.e. not at the home coverd by the policy.
Another very valuable item is legal cover – it’s the sort of thing some families might decide to remove if they have to cut expenditure but this could be an extremely costly saving in the end. Take a policy holder under retirement age who has never had ay problems with employment, never been in trouble or had their job at risk; new management or conditions come in, or they suddenly find themselves being bullied or discriminated against. When things go belly up and cannot be resolved by conciliation, they may feel thay have to leave or are fired unfairly. This is where having legal cover will be essential – if at the beginning of the problems, when the policy holder realises things have changed and they might have a problem looming, then they need to call the insurance company to be put in touch with the legal team. From that moment they should feel reassured that the legal team will assist them if there is merit in the case. They will need full details of the complaint and written notes of who said this and who did that etc. Of course, each case is different and will be handled on its merits but that cover can be a lifeline.
